You have the finished film and not the project. The reference arrives as one flat file — picture and sound already combined, the dissolves no longer editable objects, just pixels that were mixed once and baked. Everything you want to know about the edit is in there. None of it is labeled.

Scene edit detection shortens the job of finding the candidates. It does not shorten the job of deciding what they are. The detector proposes; the film decides. What follows is a way to run that loop and keep every conclusion tied to a position you can recover in the file you started from.

The finished record is small. A few confirmed boundaries with source timecodes, a transition or two described as intervals rather than points, a note about where sound runs on across a picture change, and one plain sentence per entry about what actually changed. What it is not: the original edit project, a reconstruction of how anything was shot, or permission to reuse the material. Those stay where they were.

Establish the source before dividing it

Before anything is detected, write down what you are looking at. Not as a formality — the file’s identity is the only thing that makes a later observation checkable by someone else.

  • The file name and, if your system offers one, a version identifier or checksum. Two exports of the same cut with the same duration can still differ.
  • Frame rate and total duration.
  • The file’s own start timecode, if it has one. This is the number most often skipped and most often needed.
  • Where your working sequence begins relative to that.
  • Which clock your notes will use: the film’s timecode, or elapsed frames from the film’s head.

Two clocks are now in the room and they are easy to confuse. Say the flat file carries a start timecode of 01:00:00:00 and your working sequence begins at 00:00:00:00. A note that says “cut at 8 seconds” means file timecode 01:00:08:00 — as long as nothing has been trimmed off the sequence head. Trim four seconds away and the same cut now sits at sequence 00:00:04:00, while the film still says 01:00:08:00. Any note written in sequence time before that trim is now wrong in a way that looks right.

The fix is not discipline. It is convention: record positions in the film’s own timecode, which travels with the media, and treat anything in sequence time as a temporary working note. Seconds-of-playback is the worst of the three, because it reads as precise and belongs to no clock in particular.

Keep the source file untouched, and make the analysis sequence a copy that references the same media. Then make sure the copy doesn’t quietly become “the film” in the shared language of the team. It will have a similar name, the same duration, and a row of markers on it. If notes start pointing at the analysis sequence instead of the source, the identity that made them recoverable has been replaced by something that merely looks like it.

Generate candidates with the least disruption needed

Adobe’s help page on scene edit detection documents three shapes the analysis can take — markers, subclips, and cuts — and warns that applying cuts also affects linked audio. That is the whole of what the page establishes, as of its 18 August 2026 update; I read it on 18 September 2026, and it says nothing about how often detection is right. No detection run informed this article.

For a breakdown job, markers are usually the right first move, because a breakdown is analysis rather than trimming. Markers annotate the timeline without restructuring it. Cuts change what the timeline is made of, and the linked-audio warning is the reason to think twice: in a flattened reference, a picture boundary is often not a sound boundary, and cutting the picture can slice the audio into two clips at a place where the sound never changed.

That matters later. If a hard cut at 01:00:08:00 in your reference has ambience running straight through it, the film has one continuous sound event. Apply cuts there and the timeline now asserts two. Someone in a later pass trims, fades, or nudges one of them, and the edit has just been changed by the tool that was supposed to be describing it.

So: keep a clean baseline. The untouched source file, plus a clean working sequence that nothing has been applied to. If cuts are genuinely needed — because you want to isolate passages as separate clips — do that on a third copy and say so.

Write down the software version you used. “The detector found eleven cuts” is close to meaningless without it, and the documented output options and their behavior belong to a version.

Check each boundary in motion and sound

A marker is a proposal with a position attached. It can only ever be a position, which is the first thing to understand about transitions.

In a finished film, a dissolve isn’t a cut with an effect on it. It’s twenty-four frames or so in which two images are mixed in varying proportion, and there is no frame in that run where one shot becomes the other. If detection flags it at all, it has to give you a point — the middle, most likely. The record should say interval: something like 01:00:13:00 to 01:00:14:00, twenty-four frames, overlapping images. Writing that down as a cut at 01:00:13:12 is not a rounding error. It’s a different description of the film.

Three corrections come up over and over, and they’re worth naming so you recognize them when you’re twenty minutes into stepping frames:

Missed changes. Two shots that look alike — same location, similar framing, the subject only slightly further along — can pass without a proposal. The tell is motion. Watch the second either side of where you suspect a boundary and check whether the subject’s position advances continuously. If it jumps, there’s a cut there, whether or not anything was proposed.

False changes. A bright flash, a hard exposure shift, a camera whip can produce a frame-to-frame discontinuity that no shot change accompanies. A fragment two frames long sitting between two proposals is implausible on its face — deliberately flash-framed two-frame shots exist, but they are rare and usually look like a decision. Treat implausibility as a reason to look closer, not as a finding. The finding comes from stepping through the frames and seeing whether the motion runs through them. A hand that continues moving through a burst of light is one performance in one shot.

Ambiguous transitions. Anything gradual: dissolves, fades, speed ramps at a boundary. Describe the interval and say what the two sides were.

Then listen. Run across the picture boundary with your eyes off the image. Where a picture cut is crisp and easy to mark, the sound may run straight through it, and that continuity is part of the edit’s behavior — it’s often the thing that makes two shots feel like one. Record picture boundaries and sound boundaries separately, because they will not line up. A map that says “cut at 01:00:08:00” and stops there has thrown away the more interesting half.

Describe the edit’s contribution without inventing its making

Each entry that survives review earns four fields:

  1. A recoverable source span. File, start timecode, end timecode or frame count.
  2. The visible change. What is different on one side of the boundary than the other.
  3. Its relation to what came before. What the preceding passage established that this one continues, reverses, or interrupts.
  4. The question it helps the treatment answer. Why you looked here in the first place.

Then keep observation and interpretation apart, visibly. “Ambience is unbroken across the cut at 01:00:08:00” is an observation; anyone can verify it. “The film is telling us the two spaces are one space” is a reading, and a fine one, provided it’s written as a reading.

What a finished transition cannot tell you is how any of it was made. A boundary is a boundary. It doesn’t establish that the two sides were shot on different days, which lens was used, whether a cut was planned on set, or what anyone intended. Detection output makes this worse by looking authoritative — a column of positions with frame accuracy has the texture of measurement. It measures the detector’s behavior on your file, not the production.

Keep credit attached where you have it, and keep uncertainty labeled where you don’t. “Unclear whether this is a cut or a very fast dissolve” is a legitimate, useful entry. Quietly rounding it to a cut is not.

A worked breakdown, built on a paper film

The cleanest way to test any of this is with a reference whose answer you already know, which is why the method below is usually described as building your own: a short original film with hard cuts, one dissolve, one flash inside a shot, and ambience that continues across one picture change. Nothing here was built or run. What follows is a described construction and the shape of the record, not a result.

The invented film: 24 fps, twenty-seven seconds, file timecode starting at 01:00:00:00. A street corner (01:00:00:00–01:00:08:00), a hand at a gate (01:00:08:00–01:00:13:00), a one-second dissolve into a corridor (01:00:13:00–01:00:14:00), corridor to 01:00:19:00, then a second corridor passage to 01:00:27:00 that contains a two-frame burst of light at 01:00:23:00. Ambience runs unbroken across the 01:00:08:00 cut.

Whether a given detector actually proposes anything at the flash is exactly what building your own reference would tell you — and the flash is there to find out, not because a failure is being asserted. The correction procedure is identical either way.

One entry needs the second before and after the boundary to write at all. Across 01:00:19:00 the subject’s position jumps, but the framing and the direction of travel match closely enough that the walk still reads as one movement, even though the film contains a picture boundary there. That’s a treatment-relevant observation, because a written proposal drawing on this reference could reasonably describe the corridor as a single unbroken passage — and the person writing it should know that the film achieved that with a cut, not with a single take. That sentence needs the viewing. It can’t be read off the marker list.

What a reviewed boundary can and cannot settle

A corrected breakdown tells you where the finished film changes picture, where sound runs through those changes, and what each shift does for a viewer. It’s a description of the flat file, and it’s accurate to the frame if you’ve done the work.

It does not recover the original project, and it doesn’t prove how the material was shot. Two shots joined by a cut may have been filmed a year apart or thirty seconds apart; the film doesn’t say. It also doesn’t carry any right to reuse what’s in it. A source-linked map is a research document.

When it’s finished it looks like this — short, and every line recoverable in the file it came from:

Small, traceable, and honest about the difference between what was proposed and what was seen. A long list of precise-looking cuts you never watched is worth less than five you did.
