Build a Layered Style Frame for a Commercial Treatment

A layered style frame is a composite that proposes one arrangement of product, person, environment, and light while keeping every part of that arrangement separable. You split the frame into background, subject, foreground, and any mark that carries meaning. You use masks to decide which parts of each source are visible. Then you check the camera height and repair the relationships between the pieces: depth, scale, contact, light direction. What you end up with is a frame that a client, a director, and a photographer can argue about — and that you can change between Tuesday and Thursday without starting again.

What you do not end up with is a photograph, or evidence that the shot can be made. A composite is a proposal about how things should look together. Whether a real bottle, a real counter, a real window, and a real shooting day can produce that image is a different question with different evidence behind it, and the frame should not be asked to answer it.

Make the frame answer a question you can name

A style frame earns its place by settling something. Pick the beat where the parts have to work simultaneously — where the product's size, the subject's position, the environment, and the light all have to be true at once. That is rarely the establishing shot of a room and rarely a beauty pass over the location. It is usually the moment where the product has to hold the frame while a person or a machine is doing something next to it.

Write the question down before you build anything. Not "cafe morning" but something closer to: does a 500 ml bottle read as the hero at this distance without the espresso machine pulling attention, and does the light direction let the label stay legible? That sentence tells you which elements matter, which can be approximate, and when the frame is finished. "Cafe morning" tells you nothing and will keep you working for three days.

Then mark your placeholders. Most frames at this stage contain material that is standing in for something else: a stock cafe for a location not yet scouted, a borrowed bottle for a product not yet in hand, provisional type where the brand name will eventually go. Knowing which is which changes what you accept. A placeholder can be approximate. A decision cannot, or you will be showing the client an accident and calling it a choice.

One warning worth taking seriously: the background is the easiest part of the frame to finish and the least informative. It arrives as a complete photograph, so it looks done immediately, and it is tempting to spend the afternoon making it beautiful while the hard question — where the product sits and how big it is — stays unanswered. Build the difficult interaction first, roughly, and beautify around it. If you do it the other way, the product keeps arriving into a frame that has already been tuned around its absence.

Keep source identities with the material as you go: where each element came from, who holds it, and what it is being used for. Being able to open a file is not permission to use it. If you cannot state the origin and the intended use of an element, it belongs in a version you keep internally rather than the one you present.

Separate the frame into roles, not pictures

Organize the composite by what each piece does, and name the layers that way. A workable stack for a tabletop product frame, top to bottom:

  • LABEL – product name (placeholder type)
  • SUBJECT – bottle v3 (with mask)
  • SUBJECT – bottle contact + cast shadow
  • FG – linen napkin (masked, soft)
  • BG – counter, machine, pitcher
  • BG – window glow (adjustment layer)
  • REF – depth and tangent guides (hidden before export)

Layers named by role survive handoff. A stack named Layer 4 copy 2 copy does not, and neither does one you have to reopen to remember.

Now the mechanism. Adobe's help page on adding layer masks describes the property this whole method depends on: a mask hides or reveals parts of a layer while the underlying layer content is retained. Read that as a production instruction rather than a software feature. Hiding is not deleting. When you mask away the source bottle's own printed label, the pixels are still there; when the brand sends the real name on Friday, you adjust the mask instead of hunting for the original file. Painting black directly onto a layer gives you the same picture and none of that.

Check the current page against the version you are actually running before you record a walkthrough for anyone else, because a tutorial that describes last year's menu is worse than no tutorial.

Keep the working file with layers intact. Produce a separate flattened or PDF reading export for the treatment page. Two files, two jobs: one is the argument, the other is the picture.

Put the subject at a depth before you decide its size

The example below is a worked construction, not a produced file. No composite was assembled for this article and no imagery was sourced. The numbers are stated so you can check the reasoning rather than admire a result.

The frame. A fictional cold-brew concentrate in a 500 ml amber bottle, 21 cm tall, standing on a brushed-steel cafe counter, with an espresso machine soft in the background and window light coming from camera left. Frame is 3000 × 2000 px, headed for a treatment page where it will be seen at roughly 1200 px wide and possibly printed 60 mm across.

The mistake. The bottle was dropped in and nudged until the composition felt balanced. It landed at 1450 px tall. It also landed with its base reads as standing near the front edge of the counter rather than back on the surface, and there is no darkening where the bottle meets the metal — a clean cut edge, like a sticker pressed onto the photograph.

Two problems, but they are the same problem: scale is not a property of the bottle. It is a property of the bottle at a depth. Move the base and the correct height changes.

The repair order. Check the camera height first — that answer can end the frame before any repair starts. Then depth, then scale, then contact, then light. Reversing that order means redoing work.

Camera height. Check it before you check anything else. The background plate was made with the camera 40 cm above the counter. The product plate was made at 90 cm, a common height for shooting small objects. On a cylindrical glass bottle that difference is visible in the base ellipse — how round the bottom of the bottle appears — and it will not agree with the counter's receding lines. A small mismatch can sometimes be nudged out with a slight vertical squash of the lower portion, and will pass at treatment size. A 50 cm difference on a glass cylinder will not, because the base ellipse, the counter's vanishing lines, and the machine behind all have to agree at once, and no amount of scaling fixes an argument among three things. That is a re-source or re-shoot decision, not a compositing decision, and it is better made on a Tuesday during the frame than on set.

Depth. Decide where the base sits. Say 60 cm from camera, with the counter's front edge at about 35 cm. The background plate contains a milk pitcher, 9.5 cm tall, sitting 90 cm back on the right of frame, fully visible. Its base-to-counter tangent line gives you a depth reference to sit the bottle's base against.

Scale. Apparent size falls off roughly with distance, so the bottle at 21 cm and 0.6 m should read about 3.3 times the pitcher's height — 210 mm at 0.6 m against 95 mm at 0.9 m. If the pitcher occupies 340 px in the background plate, the bottle should be near 1120 px. It was at 1450, which is about 30 percent too tall. Scaling it down is one command. Everything downstream of it is not: the cast shadow's length, the mask edge you cut for the bottle's silhouette, and the label, which is now set at a size belonging to a bottle that does not exist. A placeholder label applied to a wrongly scaled bottle is wrong twice.

Repair contact and light as relationships

Contact. A clean edge does not put an object on a surface. Three things do, and they are small: a compact dark band where the base meets the metal, a soft cast shadow travelling away from the light, and a slight overall darkening around the base as the surface picks up less light near the object. At 3000 px wide, an 8 px contact band and a graded cast shadow are enough. They are not decoration; they are what tells the eye the bottle has weight and is not hovering.

Light direction. The window is camera left and slightly behind. So the bottle's left rim should carry a bright edge, and the cast shadow should fall right and slightly forward. The product plate, being from an earlier shoot, is lit from camera right. Its highlight and shadow are both reversed.

Mirroring the bottle layer fixes the direction in one move, and it also mirrors the source bottle's own printed label, any embossing, and the shape of the highlight on the glass. That last one matters more than it sounds, because a mirrored highlight still has the right structure and the wrong origin: it now reads as a light at camera left in front of the bottle — a studio source behind the camera — rather than the window that sits beside and slightly behind it.

Here the mask does real work. The source plate's label was always going to be replaced by the treatment's placeholder type, so mirroring costs nothing on that front: mask the printed label away, flip the bottle, and set the name as its own text layer at the corrected size. The embossing and highlight asymmetry are quietly wrong and, at 1200 px on a page, invisible. Notice that you made that trade on purpose rather than by accident, because the frame may later be built at a size where it stops being invisible.

Then look again. Changing the bottle's depth moved its base relative to the counter's front edge. Changing its size changed how much of the machine it overlaps. Each repair changes the context of the others, which is why the order above exists and why the last step is a re-check rather than a save.

Keep the proposal revisable and say what is still open

One thing in this frame is still a placeholder after the repairs, and it should stay visible. The reflection band on the bottle's glass came from the source plate. After the flip it sits at camera left and reads as a source in front of the bottle rather than the window beside it — the wrong origin, not the wrong side. You have two honest options: mask the reflection out and let the bottle go flat, which reads worse at treatment size than a wrongly angled highlight, or keep it and label it. This construction keeps it and labels it.

That label is where the frame tells the truth about itself. On the reading export, in the treatment's caption or a small corner note, something plain: Composite — proposed frame. Bottle placed at 60 cm; reflection is a placeholder from the source plate. Not a confession, not boilerplate. A reader who knows it is a composite will read it as one; a reader who does not will eventually find out and distrust the frame beside it.

Inspect the export at the size it will actually be seen. At 1200 px on a laptop, the contact band is still doing its job. Printed 60 mm wide, that 8 px band becomes about 0.16 mm — present, but no longer the thing holding the image together. The structural decisions survive the downscale; the fiddly ones dissolve. That is the argument for fixing depth, scale, and light before you spend an evening on the surface detail.

Finally, know what this artifact cannot tell anyone. A still frame can clarify a set of simultaneous design choices, which is genuinely useful and hard to get any other way. It cannot say whether the movement in the shot will work, whether the composite will integrate with live-action footage, or whether the light can be made on the day at the hour the schedule allows. Those need different evidence — a test, a conversation with the person who will light it, a look at what the location actually does at 8 a.m. in March.

The frame you finish should be revisable in the ways that matter: masks you can reopen, a source you can return to, layers named well enough for someone else to work in. What it now says is specific — the bottle stands 60 cm back on the counter, its shadow falls to the right, its label is set and not final. What it still doesn't say is labeled. Layer count is not evidence that the frame communicates its intended choice; a fifteen-layer frame and a four-layer frame can make the same proposal, and the shorter one is easier to argue with.
