A treatment asks for slow motion and the sentence usually reads something like "we slow the moment down to make it feel epic." That tells the editor almost nothing usable, because "epic" is not something the camera can do. What the request actually has to carry is a perception: one detail that ordinary speed would hide, and a reason the audience needs it now.

Start by separating two things the phrase "slow motion" habitually blurs. Speed describes how an action is presented — how long the event appears to take on screen. Pacing describes how the commercial develops experience and information — how much the audience learns, and how long they wait for the next thing. You can stretch a single second across four and still be moving fast in the second sense, if that stretched second teaches the audience four things at once. You can also hold a normal-speed shot for six seconds and go nowhere.

They're different variables. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

Separate the action's speed from the sequence's pace

Ask three questions about any beat you want to treat.

How long does the event appear to take? That's the action's speed, and it's a property of how the footage plays.

How much new information arrives? That's the informational pace — how many discoveries, reversals, or recognitions land per second of screen time.

And what is the audience waiting for? That's the structural pace — how long the sequence holds off the thing it has promised.

A prolonged instant can be full of information. Think of a stretched beat where you watch a surface deform, a hand change direction, a face decide. Three or four distinct perceptions can arrive inside a second of screen time, even though the action itself is playing slowly. Nothing is withheld. The audience is learning quickly inside a slow image.

The reverse is just as ordinary. A camera follows someone walking the length of a parking lot at normal speed. The image is moving fast — feet, legs, background sliding — and nothing new arrives. The sequence is holding. That's slow pace built entirely from normal-speed footage.

On the two kinds of pace: the informational rate is something you can plan on the page. The audience's waiting is something you estimate and then find out in the edit. Treat any claim about what an audience will feel as a proposed construction, not a law. You are describing the intended effect so a collaborator can build toward it, not promising a result.

Name the detail that needs the extra attention

This is where the treatment earns the effect.

Decide what the changed speed is for. Not the mood. The specific thing that becomes legible: a deformation, a hand arriving somewhere, a glance that changes direction before the rest of the body does, a loss of balance, a surface flexing under weight. Then say what ordinary-speed presentation would give instead, because the comparison is the argument.

"He catches the cup" at normal speed reads as one event: the save. The audience gets the outcome and moves on. The near-miss, the margin, the exact point of contact — all of that is there in the footage and unreadable at speed. If you want the audience to perceive the margin, you have to buy them the time to look at it.

If you can't name the detail and what changes when the audience finally sees it, remove the speed change. This isn't a stylistic position; it's a practical one. A speed change that reveals nothing is a load-bearing decision in post with no reason attached, and it will get cut, or worse, kept. "Epic" and "cinematic" are not specifications. They describe how the request wants to feel about itself.

Write the entry, the altered beat, and the return

Treat a speed change as a transition with a beginning, a middle, and an exit, and write all three. Editors need the entry point far more than they need the adjective.

Where does it start? Name the last frame of normal speed, in terms of what's happening, not a timecode. "As the tray tilts past the point where the liquid would go over" is an entry. "Halfway through the shot" is not, because nobody can find it.

What remains visible during the altered section? List the specific things the audience can now read. Two or three, in order. This is the payload of the effect, and it's also the test of whether you need it.

What releases the sequence back? Name the event that ends the treatment — the hand steadying the tray, the cup settling flat, the next line of dialogue. And then say what the sequence does immediately after.

That last part matters more than people expect. A lingering hold after the important detail can change the pace more than the speed change itself, and the editor should be told that you know the difference. If the plan is to stay on the recovery after the save is already clear, say so separately, as its own instruction. Don't fold it into the speed request, because they're different decisions and one may survive without the other.

Two things to specify if they change the experience:

The surrounding shots. What comes before the treatment and what comes after it, at what speed. A slow-motion beat dropped between two fast shots and a slow-motion beat dropped between two slow ones are different editorial objects, even with identical footage in the middle.

The sound relationship. Two common proposals: keep the bed continuous across the transition, so the changed image sits inside an unchanged room; or let a specific sound define the entry and return. Keep the two proposals in separate sentences. Don't mix them into one. The choice says something about prominence — whether the catch reads as one event among many or as the event. Also flag that whether any sound element is itself stretched is a decision for the sound team. It isn't automatically implied by the picture, and it's worth saying out loud so nobody assumes.

Use the right technique name without turning the treatment into a manual

"Slow motion" is not a general term for "time looks wrong." Three different constructions get collapsed into it constantly, and the collapse causes real production trouble.

Slow motion presents a continuous action and stretches it. The event happened once, in real time, in front of the camera, and the audience sees it drawn out.

Time-lapse compresses an extended event — something that genuinely took hours — into a short stretch. The event is continuous, but the presentation is massively accelerated. A room filling and emptying across an afternoon. Sunlight crossing a counter.

Stop motion builds a motion that never existed continuously. Objects are moved in small increments and photographed, and the movement the audience sees is assembled, not recorded. An animated object isn't a sped-up or slowed-down anything; it's a construction.

They share a visual family — time doesn't behave the way the audience expects — and they are not interchangeable labels. If the treatment says "slow motion" and the shot list says "animating the cup a frame at a time," someone has misunderstood something, and it won't surface until the shoot.

There's a second reason to keep the terminology tight. The name of the effect is a description of what the viewer sees. It is not a capture specification. How a particular camera achieves a given playback result, what that requires from lighting, what settings are involved, what post has to do — those are camera and post-production questions, they depend on the equipment and the software version, and they should be answered by a qualified practitioner against current documentation. Don't put that answer in the treatment. Put the visible result in the treatment and let the person who owns the camera own the method. If you must mention implementation, mark it as an open question for the department, not a decision you've made.

This keeps the treatment useful for longer. A production method may change. The perceptual event shouldn't.

The catch: three versions of one moment

Here's a proposed sequence. It's a construction, not a rendered test, and the durations are hypotheses.

A server crosses a diner carrying a tray. Her knee catches the corner of a table. The tray tilts. A plastic tumbler on the tray slides toward the edge, leaning past the point where the liquid would go over. Her hand comes down and two fingertips catch the rim. The tumbler rocks once and settles. She steadies the tray and continues.

Four visible events live inside that recovery: the cup's angle past the tipping point, the liquid line climbing and holding at the inside of the rim, the rim flexing under her fingertips, and the tray coming back flat.

Version A — everything at ordinary speed. The audience reads the save and nothing else. The margin, the contact, the liquid line: all recorded, none legible. The sequence arrives at her next action almost immediately. Informational pace: one event. Speed: real time. The scene moves.

Version B — speed changes across the catch only, returning as she steadies. The stretch begins as the tumbler passes the tipping point and ends when the tray comes flat. Inside that stretch the audience gets all four events: the angle, the liquid line halting at the rim, the flex under the fingers, the settling. Then ordinary speed resumes and the sequence proceeds. Informational pace: four events inside roughly a second of screen time — fast, in the pacing sense, inside a slow image. This is the version that teaches the audience how close it was.

Version C — Version B, plus a hold on the recovery. Same altered-speed catch. But the shot continues after the tray is flat: her exhale, the tumbler at rest, the tray level, the table corner still where it was. Nothing new is discovered after the first beat of the hold. The sequence has stopped advancing and started sitting. This is slow pacing, and it's produced by the hold, not by the speed change. If the commercial's job there is relief — letting the audience feel the interval after the danger — the hold earns its seconds. If the job is momentum, the hold is the wrong decision and the speed change was never the problem.

That's the point of running the three together. B and C share an identical speed treatment and land differently, because pacing is governed by what happens after and around the effect. And a fourth version with no speed change at all — ordinary speed throughout, holding on her face after the save — can be as slow-paced as C. Speed and pace move independently.

Now the sound. Take Version B and run it twice. Continuous bed: diner noise, cutlery, conversation, unchanged through the entry, the catch, and the exit. The catch reads as an event in the room, one thing among many. Defined entry: the bed drops or a specific sound — the rim meeting her fingers, the liquid's small correction — comes forward for the stretched section, then the bed returns as the tray flattens. The catch reads as the event in the room. Same picture, different claim about where the audience's attention belongs. Both are proposals to hand to the sound team, not descriptions of what sound does when you slow a shot.

The separate contrast. If you wanted the diner across a whole day — tables filling and emptying, light moving across the counter — that's time-lapse. If you wanted the tumbler to travel across the tray as a constructed movement, positioned in increments, that's stop motion. Say either of those and a collaborator pictures an entirely different production than the catch in Version B, even though all three look like "time not behaving." Don't use the catch to demonstrate capture methods. It demonstrates one thing: a stretched instant that reveals what ordinary speed hides.

What to confirm before this becomes a technical explanation

Everything above is a planning construction. No footage exists, no export exists, and nothing here establishes that one duration actually performs better than another with an audience — that's found in the edit, with real material, and confirmed in the room.

Before any of this gets explained as technique, two things are worth doing. Find a creator-published breakdown of a speed change and see how a working filmmaker describes their own entry, hold, and return in plain language. And get a cinematographer or post supervisor to review any statement about capture, playback, or lighting before it goes into a treatment as fact. Which camera, which software version, what it requires — that's their call against current documentation, not something a treatment should assert. The terminology decision above is the part worth keeping now: slow motion, time-lapse, and stop motion describe different constructions and shouldn't be filed under one explanation.
