Draw a Simple Perspective Sketch of the Commercial's Space

The drawing has one job: make a single spatial relationship obvious to someone who wasn't in the room when you pictured it. So fix that relationship first, in a sentence. Choose the viewpoint that makes the sentence visible. Set eye level as a horizontal line across the page. Run every receding edge to one point on that line. Build the room's large planes, then the opening, then an object and a person-sized cue. And then check the edges against each other, repairing from the construction rather than from a soft pencil.

A treatment sketch can be ugly. It cannot be self-contradictory. Those are different failures, and only one of them sinks the proposal.

Choose one view that answers the scene's question

Write the relationship in plain words before you touch paper. Not "a moody kitchen" — that's not spatial. Something like: the doorway opens in the right wall about four metres ahead, and the table sits in the near left foreground, so anyone coming through that door will be in frame before they reach the table. That sentence names a viewpoint, an opening, an object and an action position. If you can't write it, no amount of drawing will supply it, because you'll be making composition decisions with nothing to decide against.

Then accept what the viewpoint costs. A viewpoint isn't just where you stand; it's what you've agreed not to show. Stand near the left wall and look square down the room and you'll see a generous stretch of the left wall and almost none of the right one — the opposite wall falls outside the forward view. Stand dead centre and both side walls appear as roughly equal wedges. Move back and you take in more of the room but lose the intimacy of a foreground object. Pick the exclusion on purpose.

Draw the horizon next. It's your eye level, and it stays horizontal across the whole sheet. Everything in the real space that sits at your eye height lands on that line no matter how far away it is. In an interior where the camera stands on the floor, that's usually somewhere around 1.5 to 1.7 metres up.

The line gives you a free check that most rough sketches fail. Stand a camera at roughly standing-adult eye height and every standing adult you draw in that room has their eyes on, or within a centimetre or two of, the horizon — at one metre or at six. When a figure's eyes drift well above or below it, you've either drawn them the wrong size or you've drawn them sitting down. It's the fastest scale check available, and it costs nothing.

Now decide the construction. There are two common ones, and the choice belongs to the shot, not to your confidence. One-point means you're looking square at a wall: that wall's top and bottom edges are horizontal on the page, its vertical edges stay vertical, and the two side walls, the floor and the ceiling all recede to a single point. Two-point means you're looking into a corner, so two wall directions recede to two separate points. One-point is the right main tool for an entrance or a foreground–background relationship, because it puts the far wall squarely in front of the audience and makes distance legible. Take it if the proposal is "someone arrives from the back of the space." Take two-point if the proposal is genuinely about how two walls meet. Don't take half of each. The most common way to ruin a one-point room is to let an edge quietly stop answering the single point you chose, and that is the kind of mistake the third section takes apart.

Build the big planes before you place the action

Here's a made-up proposal to work through. The dimensions are stipulations for the exercise, not measurements of anywhere real, and there's no picture in this piece — the geometry is stated so you can run the checks yourself with a ruler.

The room is 4.2 metres wide, 6.5 metres deep and 2.7 metres high. The camera stands 1.8 metres in from the left wall, 6.5 metres from the back wall, eye level at 1.6 metres, looking square at the back wall. The doorway is 0.9 metres wide and 2.05 metres high, cut into the right wall 3.7 to 4.6 metres from the camera. The foreground object is a table, 1.2 metres wide and 0.75 metres high, near the left of frame, closer to the camera than the door. The action: a person walks in through the doorway.

Horizon, then vanishing point. Draw the horizon at eye level. Because you're looking straight at the back wall, the vanishing point sits inside the outline the back wall will occupy — and where along the horizon it sits is not arbitrary. It's your standing position, projected onto the back wall. Stand 1.8 metres from the left wall of a 4.2-metre room and the vanishing point sits 1.8 ÷ 4.2, about 43 per cent of the way across the drawn back wall from its left edge. Draw the back wall too narrow or too wide and you simply divide whatever width you drew.

The back wall. A rectangle: two vertical edges, two horizontal ones. Its height has a proportion worth getting right. The floor line sits below the horizon by 1.6 metres' worth and the ceiling line above it by 1.1 metres' worth, and both are at the same distance, so the floor line should sit about 1.45 times as far below the horizon as the ceiling line sits above. Get that ratio backwards and the room reads as a crawlspace with a tall ceiling, or a corridor with an oddly low one.

The side walls. From each of the back wall's four corners, run a line to the vanishing point. Top-left and top-right corners give you where each side wall meets the ceiling; bottom-left and bottom-right give you where each wall meets the floor. Those four lines are the room. Crop them where the sheet ends. Note that the ceiling lines descend toward the vanishing point as they recede while the floor lines rise toward it: on the page the room closes toward eye level, and every receding edge heads for the same point.

The doorway. Two verticals for the jambs and two receding lines for the head and the threshold. To place the jambs vertically, use the wall itself as a ruler. At any distance, the drawn height of the right wall is the gap between its floor line and its ceiling line at that point on the page — and the door is 2.05 metres of a 2.7-metre wall, so it takes up about 0.76 of that gap. Measure 76 per cent up from the floor line at each jamb and you have the head points, whatever the distance. The head and threshold lines then go through those points and extend to the vanishing point.

The scale cues. Put one figure standing in the doorway, about 1.75 metres tall, feet on the threshold. Put another seated at the table, eyes around 1.2 metres. The standing figure's eyes fall almost exactly on the horizon; the seated figure's fall clearly below it. Nothing about distance caused that difference — it's purely eye height, which is a useful thing to have felt once. Now compare their heads: the near one is drawn bigger. It should be, in proportion to how much nearer it is. If the seated person's head is the same size as the standing one's, they belong to different drawings.

Find the contradiction that rendering can't repair

Now the test. Draw the doorway again with one edge wrong, the way it usually goes wrong.

Put the near end of the threshold in the right place — at the foot of the near jamb, on the wall's floor line — then run the line up-left by eye instead of taking it to the vanishing point. It rises faster than the wall's floor line does, so the far end lands about 0.4 metres above where the floor actually is. The opening now stops short of the ground, with a strip of wall beneath it.

Three things break at once.

The opening changes function. A doorway whose bottom edge climbs away from the floor and stops 0.4 metres up the wall isn't a doorway. Read at a glance, it's a serving hatch, a pass-through, a doorway with a high sill. You asked for someone to walk in and you drew something they'd have to step over.

The door pinches. Compare the jambs. In the correct drawing, the near jamb is drawn about 1.24 times the height of the far jamb, because the near jamb is 3.7 metres from the camera and the far one is 4.6 — and 4.6 ÷ 3.7 is 1.24. In the wrong version the ratio is closer to 1.55. The far edge is too short for its own distance, and the opening looks like it's leaning away.

The edges stop agreeing with each other. This is the real fault. The threshold is meant to be the wall's floor line between the jambs — not a line parallel to it, the same line. In the wrong version it starts on that line and then leaves it, climbing to stand 0.4 metres clear of the floor at the far jamb. Lay a straightedge along the door head, which is meant to be horizontal, and its extension crosses the horizon exactly at the vanishing point. Lay it along the wrong threshold and the extension crosses the horizon at a point corresponding to roughly 7.3 metres from the camera — a finite place, not a second vanishing point, just where a line climbing at that rate reaches eye height. A line lying in the floor plane meets the horizon only at its own vanishing point, the image of a point infinitely far off; a line that meets it at a finite place has risen out of the floor. So the opening's lower edge now belongs to a surface tilted up from the plane the rest of the room stands on, and a viewer who can't name the problem will still feel the kink.

Then follow the action. Put the standing figure at the far jamb, where the wrong threshold has climbed its full height. Their feet sit 0.4 metres above the floor, which puts their head at 2.15 metres — ten centimetres through the 2.05-metre door head. The figure no longer fits the door. If you nudge them down until they look right under the lintel, you've now got a person standing below the surface you drew, and the sill is still there in front of them.

Shading will not touch any of this. A rendered, softly shadowed version of the wrong drawing looks more finished and is still wrong; the tone hides the convergence rather than correcting it. The audience doesn't need to identify the error to register that something is off, and a rough sketch that reads as hesitant is a much better outcome than a polished one that reads as subtly impossible.

The repair is small and it doesn't involve redrawing. The threshold of a door that reaches the floor is the wall's floor line, between the two jambs — the line you already have, the one running from the back wall's lower-right corner to the vanishing point. Don't estimate it; find it and use the segment. Extend the wall's floor line across the opening, mark where the jambs cross it, and the threshold is done. The door reaches the ground, the jambs come back to a 1.24 ratio, and the standing figure's feet drop onto the floor with about 30 centimetres of clearance under the door head.

Take the repair seriously enough to re-check what depended on it. The figure moved down 0.4 metres in the drawing, which moves their head, their shoulders, and any prop held at chest height. If the table, the second character's sightline or the frame's lower edge was positioned around them, those decisions were made against a figure standing on a ledge you never intended. Fix the threshold first, then walk forward through the drawing and re-check each thing that was placed relative to it.

One assumption is doing work here: the opening goes all the way down to the floor. If the proposal actually calls for a step, a raised sill or a platform, then the threshold is a different line and you have to draw it deliberately, at the correct fraction of the wall's drawn height at each jamb. Say which you mean. An ambiguous threshold is exactly the kind of detail that gets resolved on set by someone who assumed the other thing.

Keep the estimates visible when the talk turns dimensional

A sketch that has survived the edge check still has no scale. It has proportions. Treat any number you read off it as an estimate and label it that way: mark the opening width and height with an approximate sign or the word est., and don't put a bare figure next to a line you guessed. The labels worth having are the ones that keep two things from being confused — eye level, the opening, the intended action position — and not much else. Detail beyond that crowds the relationship you drew the thing to explain.

There's a specific moment to stop reading the sketch, and it arrives as a clearance question. Can a dolly get through that opening? Does the grip have room to swing a boom? Is there enough floor between the table and the door for the actor to cross in the time the action needs? The honest answer is that you can't get it from this drawing. Reasonable estimates from the sketch have already given you proportions you can talk about; anything finer is a guess wearing a number's clothing, and multiplying a guessed door height by a guessed gap is how a treatment acquires a dimension nobody chose.

That's the point to leave the perspective sketch and go to a supplied plan and elevation, or to a separate measured model. Different tools answer different questions. A plan settles distances, clearances and whether two people can pass each other. A perspective settles what the shot looks like from one place. Neither one substitutes for the other, and the perspective drawing in particular will never tell you a real dimension, because it has none in it. If a dimensioned set drawing exists, it wins. If one doesn't, say that the drawing is a proposal and that the numbers need a designer's source information before anyone builds from them.

What to hand over

End with the spatial proposition and the assumptions it rests on, stated on the page rather than explained in conversation. The propositions are the plain sentence from the start: the door is in the right wall about four metres ahead, the table is in the near left foreground, a person entering is in frame before they reach the table. The assumptions are eye level, the opening width and height, and whether the floor runs through the door unbroken.

Keep the construction lines. Keep the corrected threshold visible next to the one it replaced if you're working on paper, because the corrected version looks unremarkable and the comparison is what shows why it's right. A tidy version with the guides erased loses the only evidence the proposal is spatially coherent — and the whole reason to draw this by hand, rather than gathering location photographs that answer a different question, is that a hand drawing makes its own reasoning visible.

If the proposal actually calls for a step, raised sill or platform, draw that threshold deliberately at the correct fraction of the wall's drawn height at each jamb and say which you mean.
