Both routes will hand you a file that stops where the picture stops. That's the trap. A structural edit changes which music exists — you remove or reorder bars, and what remains keeps its original tempo, its original feel, its original performance. A time change keeps every bar and alters how fast each one goes. Decide by duration and the two look interchangeable. Decide by the musical relationship that has to survive the cut and they stop looking alike at all.

So name the relationship first, before touching anything. Which arrival is the picture waiting for? Which phrase gives that arrival its meaning? How much runway does it need? Everything after that is arithmetic and listening.

The example that follows is invented — a paper comparison, not a rendered test — because the point is the decisions, not a file I can play for you. Real numbers make the trade-offs visible. Whether the result is any good can only be settled by auditioning it, and that step is yours.

Mark the event the music cannot lose

Here is the situation. A temporary cue, thirty seconds long, four-four at 96 BPM, so each bar is 2.5 seconds and there are twelve of them. It has a vocal, and the structure is clean:

  • Bars 1–4, intro: pad swell, no vocal. Bar 1 fades the pad in. Bar 4 lands a low note that cues what follows.
  • Bars 5–8, first vocal line: "we don't get the morning twice."
  • Bars 9–10, build: a rising tag, "keep the light on," over a suspended chord.
  • Bar 11, the arrival: full band on beat one, drum stop, a sustained vowel on the downbeat. The suspension resolves here — this is a resolution, not just a chord change.
  • Bar 12, release: the last chord decays.

The arrival is at 25.0 seconds. The release runs to 30.0.

The picture is a 24.0-second pitch sample for an invented countertop grinder, music starting at picture zero. At 20.0 seconds the machine resolves into focus and the wordmark lands on the frame. The last four seconds hold the pack shot.

Picture needs a 24.0-second cue whose arrival sits at 20.0 seconds. The original arrival is five seconds too late and the cue is six seconds too long.

Now separate two kinds of requirement. The wordmark frame is an exact synchronization: the arrival either lands on it or it doesn't, and you can check it frame by frame. "The music should feel like it's been building the whole time" is a preference. Both matter, but only one of them can be verified with a scrub bar, and the verifiable one is the one people argue about. Protect the one you can't verify by naming the phrase that does the work: "keep the light on," sung over the suspended chord in bars 9 and 10, is what makes bar 11 land as a resolution instead of as a downbeat. That line is the load-bearing element. Any cut that damages it damages the arrival, even if the arrival is still on the frame.

Try a structural edit without changing the source tempo

You need to remove 6.0 seconds total: 5.0 before the arrival, 1.0 after it. Five seconds is exactly two bars, so the intro is the obvious donor, because it's the only region carrying no vocal.

But there are three ways to remove two bars from a four-bar intro, and they are not equivalent. Drop bars 2 and 3 and you keep the pad's fade-in plus the low cue note, with only 2.5 seconds of bloom where there used to be 7.5. Drop bars 1 and 2 and the pad begins at full level — no fade — which puts an audible corner at the top of the spot. Drop bars 3 and 4 and you keep a full five-second bloom, but the vocal then enters with no cue note underneath it. Same 5.0 seconds, same total, three different adverts. Keep bars 1 and 4.

The join between bar 1 and bar 4 is where you work. Bar 1 ends with the pad still sounding, and bar 4 was written to follow a bar of sustain. Cut them together and the pad stops mid-breath. A short crossfade of a few frames hides it, but a crossfade pulls the tail of bar 1 over the front of the low note, so the note arrives slightly blurred. Two or three frames is usually enough; a quarter-second is a smear. Listen to the join at normal speed and then again at half speed, because a click you can edit out and a blurred attack you can't are easy to confuse at full speed.

The last second comes off the end of bar 12. That's a decay, so nothing depends on it — but cut it hard and the truncated reverb makes a small click, which means the "trim" is really a one-second fade. Once you've placed the arrival against the picture, the tail is the cheapest place in the cue to find time.

Result: 24.0 seconds, arrival at 20.0 seconds, both vocal lines intact, the build intact, the resolution intact. The cost is a five-second intro where there used to be ten, so the pad has 2.5 seconds instead of 7.5 to bloom before the low note. On a sample that opens with a slow push toward the product, that is a real loss. State it out loud rather than hoping nobody notices.

Try a time change without pretending the structure stayed untouched

The other route leaves every bar in place. You need 30.0 seconds to become 24.0, and 25.0 to become 20.0 — the same ratio both times, 0.8. So a uniform temporal change of 80 percent duration (25 percent faster) puts the arrival exactly where you want it and ends the file exactly where you want it. The 0.8 is this example's arithmetic, not a recommendation; a different picture timing produces a different number.

At 80 percent duration, the cue plays as if it were written at 120 BPM. That's the whole point and the whole problem. Every bar survives the operation, and none of them means the same thing. A cue whose character came from a slow, wide, unhurried delivery is now twenty-five percent more eager across its entire length.

What actually changes, in order of how much it will bother you:

  • Vocal character. With pitch preservation on, the pitch holds but the formants and the vibrato rate don't. A relaxed sustained note becomes pinched and slightly nervous. That wordless vowel on bar 11 is the arrival; it now has twenty percent less time—half a second from a 2.5-second bar—to be an arrival.
  • Pitch, if preservation is off. The whole cue rises by the ratio, which is a little under a major third. Fine if the music stands alone, less fine if anything else in the mix has a fixed pitch.
  • Reverb and room. Decays get compressed with everything else. Nothing about your reverb settings changed, and the cue still sounds drier and closer than the original.
  • Transients. Percussive material is where a time change is most audible. A drum stop that read as a hard stop may read as a soft one.

Record what you did: the exact pitch-preservation setting, the algorithm or preset, the software version. The same source stretched by two settings produces two different results, and in three weeks nobody will remember which one you heard.

Here's the part worth carrying out of this section. If you want the arrival absolutely locked, split the cue at bar 11 into two clips, place the second clip on the frame, and let the tools work on the front clip alone. The anchor stops moving because nothing is generating it. Set the target, render the arrangement, then open the markers and look at where the joins actually fell. Ask three questions in this order. Did a join land inside "keep the light on," or mid-word? Where did bar 11 end up relative to picture 20.0? And does the build still run into the hit, or has the generated arrangement reshuffled the ramp so that the arrival now arrives after something else?

If one event must be anchored, split at the arrival before you do any of this, so the front clip can be rearranged around a fixed endpoint—and take the same one-second fade off the tail so the file ends at 24.0. Then treat the output exactly as you'd treat a colleague's proposed cut: a proposal, not a result. Nothing about a generated arrangement constitutes musical approval, and nothing about it is a judgment about whether you have the right to alter this track. Choose the compromise in the picture, not on the ruler

Before the decision, look at the version that matches the ruler exactly and fails anyway. Remove bars 9 and 10 — the build — and fade one second off the release. Total: 24.0 seconds. Why would anyone make that cut? Because on the waveform, the pad swell and the build are both low-level, low-contrast stretches with nothing to see. The waveform shows you level, not function. Two five-second regions can look equally featureless and do completely unrelated jobs — one is duplicated texture, the other is the only thing making the next moment mean something. Cutting by appearance gets you the version that passes the ruler and fails the room.

For this cue, the structural edit is the route: it keeps the resolution and the words, and its cost is confined to an intro that is expendable by design. That isn't a general rule.
