A treatment can look finished and be missing a paragraph. There are two ways that happens, and only one of them is polite enough to announce itself.
When a text frame is threaded to the next one and the copy no longer fits, InDesign tells you. The out port carries an overset indicator, which is Adobe's way of saying that text exists but has nowhere visible to go. The words are still in the document, still part of the story, waiting for space. When instead the copy has been pasted into separate, unconnected frames, the paragraph that got cut during a repair and never pasted back is simply absent. Nothing is overset. No port shows anything unusual. The page looks like a page.
The difference between those two situations is the whole article. Build the treatment's argument as one continuing story in threaded frames, keep everything that stands on its own outside that story, and treat overflow as a condition to resolve rather than a hint to delete. Then check the export against the approved copy, because the software's indicators speak only for the story — never for the caption you forgot to move.
Start with real copy and distinguish the two text jobs
Bring the longest real passage into the layout early. Sample copy is a liar: it fits, it reflows gracefully, and it teaches you nothing about the paragraph that runs long or the subheading that lands in the middle of a page. The section you're tempted to shorten so it fits is the section that determines whether your structure holds, so use it from the beginning.
Then sort the material into two piles — not text and images, but one argument and everything that stands alone.
The argument is the continuous prose that makes the case. Its section headings belong to it, because a heading is a paragraph with a job, and the job is to sit in the flow at a particular point in the reasoning. A caption does not belong to it. Neither does the cover block, the closing page, or the page numbers. These are things you place deliberately and count separately.
Paragraph styles and character styles are the tools for this sorting, and Adobe's documentation on text styles draws the line clearly: paragraph styles apply to entire paragraphs, character styles to selected text within them. So the body paragraphs, the section heads, and anything else that governs a whole paragraph get their own styles. Local emphasis — a product name that needs to sit differently, one phrase the writer has marked — gets a character style.
Why bother, in a document this short? Because the treatment will change shape. It moves from an 11 × 8.5 landscape to A4 for a client who prints, or the body size drops a point when the argument gets longer. With styles, that's one redefinition and the whole story follows. With manual formatting, it's a pass over every run of text, and the paragraphs most likely to be missed are the ones that got pushed across frames in the last repair, because they're no longer where you remember them. Styles also let you import formatting into the next treatment rather than rebuilding it.
Keep this part modest. You need roles for the few things that actually recur, not a publishing system.
Thread the continuation instead of pasting it again
Here's the invented example the rest of this piece works through. There is no real client, no photograph, and no file: it's a paper construction for a method, and the copy is deliberately plain filler. What matters is its shape and its counts.
Ferndale Bread Co., "First Light." Six landscape pages. Page 1 is the cover. Pages 2 through 5 carry one continuous argument — eleven paragraphs and three headings — threaded through four text frames, one per page. Page 6 closes the document. In the baseline state, before any image is added, the story runs 144 lines, the four frames hold 30, 40, 40, and 40, and the story ends six lines above the bottom of the last frame.
A frame, in this arrangement, is a window. The story is the content. When you thread, you connect windows so that one window's overflow becomes the next window's supply. Adobe's "Thread text frames" documentation, which the page revision dates to 2 June 2026, describes exactly this: text flows through connected frames, and the ports and overset indicator expose continuations or text that lacks visible space. The operation itself is a small one — the out port of the first frame is the handle, and the frame you click next becomes its continuation. Your version's cursor and menu labels may differ from anyone else's; confirm them in your own copy, since that's a live check and this isn't.
What you get is a chain with two ends. The first frame's in port is empty because nothing flows into it. The last frame's out port is empty when the story ends and fits, and it carries the overset indicator when text doesn't fit anywhere. An arrow in an out port means the story continues into another frame somewhere, so it appears on frames that are not the last one. The empty port, the overset indicator, and the arrow all look different and mean different things, and telling them apart is most of the daily skill.
Text that is overset is not text that is deleted. It is in the story, in reading order, in the document. Nothing on the page shows it, which is why the out port is the only honest witness in the room. When you see the indicator, the message is about space. The paragraph is fine. The frames are wrong.
Make one image change expose the weak construction
Now insert a photograph at the top of page 3 — the second frame in the chain — with a caption beneath it. Picture and caption together take height equivalent to fourteen lines of body copy, and the caption lives in its own frame, deliberately outside the story, because a caption is not part of the reasoning being made.
Build this twice from the same locked copy.
The pasted version. Four frames, no connections. Blocks of the argument are dropped into each one by hand: the first five paragraphs into page 2's frame, the next several into page 3's, and so on. Nothing links them; each frame is its own small story.

Insert the image into both and watch what each demands of you.
In the threaded version, the second frame loses fourteen lines of capacity and the chain reflows on its own. The story pushes forward: the second frame now holds 26 lines instead of 40, the third and fourth fill to their limits at 40 each, and the total capacity falls to 136 against a story of 144. Eight lines have nowhere to go. Because the last paragraph is exactly eight lines long, that paragraph is the one that goes overset.
Notice what the page looks like now. Page 5 ends with the final line of paragraph ten, which finishes with a period at the bottom of the last frame. It reads as a completed page. The argument appears to conclude. The only thing on screen that disagrees is the out port of the last frame. This is the finished-looking page that is hiding a paragraph, and it is why "the layout looks done" is not a check.
In the pasted version, the same image change demands manual arithmetic. You decide that fourteen lines have to leave page 3, so you cut a paragraph from one frame and paste it into a later frame. Two things can go wrong, and they are not equally loud.
If you copy rather than cut, the paragraph appears on both pages, and the reader meets the same sentence twice.
If you cut and the paste doesn't land — wrong frame, wrong page, interrupted halfway through a Tuesday — the paragraph is gone from the document entirely, and this is the silent one. A frame holding less text than it should looks exactly like a frame holding the right amount of text. Emptiness is not a signal. The software did nothing wrong here; the copy was never placed, and a thing that was never placed cannot be overset.
There's a third cost, quieter than either: in the pasted version the argument no longer exists in one place. Answering "did all of the copy make it in?" means checking fragment against fragment against the source, by eye, every time.
Two inventories. This is the check that catches both versions, and it works because it refuses to trust a single page.
The first inventory is the story. Walk the chain and confirm the sequence: every paragraph present, in order, and the last frame's out port clear of the overset indicator. If it's clear, the story fits — that is all it means.
The second inventory is everything that isn't in the story. The cover block. The caption. The closing page. The page numbers. These have no relationship to any port, and no overset indicator will ever speak for them. The caption under the photograph can be missing entirely, or still carrying a note like "studio test, not final," while the story's ports show a perfectly healthy chain. Count these items against your own list.
Repair the space before you touch the words
Eight lines of story are now invisible, and the honest options are all spatial.
You can move the image. Moving the photograph to page 4 only relocates the capacity loss: page 4's frame gives up the same fourteen lines, and the story still runs eight lines too long. To actually return the lines, shrink the image by at least eight lines' worth of height or move it outside the threaded story entirely. Shrinking it enough lets the story reflow without another keystroke. This is the cheapest repair and not always the right one: the image was probably placed at that point in the argument on purpose, and moving it changes where the reader encounters the evidence. That's an editorial decision wearing a layout costume. If the placement carries meaning, get agreement before you move it. The caption travels with it, either by dragging both frames or by grouping them, and it needs a look afterward regardless.
You can change the frame arrangement. Gain room by extending the last frame, adjusting the space between paragraphs, or moving the image into the margin. The cost is that a change to one page's architecture rarely stays on one page, so check the page transitions you disturbed rather than only the page you fixed.
Or you can add a frame at the end of the chain, or a page for it. The treatment grows from six pages to seven, and the client sees a longer document. Sometimes that's simply the truth about how much copy there is.
What none of these options includes is reducing the type size until the words fit, and none of them includes editing the argument to save space. The layout can change the room. It cannot change the words. If a sentence genuinely needs to go, that proposal goes to the writer who owns the copy, not into the story as a fait accompli — and the same is true of the argument-level question of whether the piece is simply too long for the format, which is a different job with a different answer.
After the repair, redo both inventories. Walk the chain end to end, including the final paragraph, which is the one most likely to have been forgotten precisely because its absence was invisible. Check the captions. Check the page transitions: the last line on page 3 should continue into the first line on page 4, with no sentence repeated and none skipped.
Then export and compare. Read the PDF's last page against the last paragraph of the approved copy, and read the transitions against the same source. Nothing in the export knows what the approved copy said, and no indicator will flag a missing caption, so this is a human read-through — short, boring, and the only thing that actually closes the loop.
Keep the two artifacts apart. The editable document is the working file; the PDF is the reading copy you send. When someone asks for a change, it goes back into the editable file and the PDF is re-exported, so the two never drift into being two different documents.
A story you can trace
The measure of this layout isn't whether page 3 looks elegant with a photograph on it. It's whether you can point to every paragraph of the argument, in order, after the photograph moved — and whether the same paragraph appears once and only once in the exported reading copy.
A threaded story gives you that traceability because it exists as one object with two ends, and its ports tell you where it continues and where it stops. The independent items give you nothing of the kind, so they get a list and a look. And when the page looks finished while the last paragraph sits unplaced, the page is the last thing you should believe.
