A Photoshop texture brush is two things wearing one name. The first is the tip: a small grayscale image that decides what a single impression looks like. The second is the behavior: how that impression repeats, rotates and changes as you drag. Photoshop saves both inside one preset, which is why it's easy to spend an afternoon tuning the wrong half — polishing a stamp that was never the problem while the stamp interval stays visible at every scale.
That split matters for the treatment you're working on. Prepare the tip from a mark you own and can re-scan. Design the stroke separately, at the size the frame uses. Then prove the tool still behaves the same way after it leaves your document. What you're building isn't a stamp collection, and it isn't a claim that software reproduces dry brush on paper. It's a way to make a deliberate mark many times and revise the decision later.
The procedures below are for you to run in your own file. Nothing here was painted, exported or reopened on your behalf; where numbers appear, they're a setup to reproduce.
Preserve the mark before preparing its tip
Capture one dry mark against a plain background. One, not twelve. A single pass of a dry brush — visible start, worn middle, lifted end — gives you a tip with a direction and a broken edge, which are the two properties you're actually trying to keep. A sheet of assorted marks costs you twenty minutes of choosing before you've made anything.
Keep the unedited capture. Copy it, then clean the copy. There will come a point when the tip looks wrong, and the only way to know whether that's your cleanup or your settings is to compare against the original. Both faults can look identical in a test stamp: a sad gray speck where an interesting edge should be.
On the copy, remove what surrounds the mark — scanner shadow, the paper's edge, a ring from the mug — and stop there. Whatever you leave in, the tip keeps; it has no idea what you intended. But cleaning is not the same as smoothing. Broken edges, separated bristle tracks, and patches where the paper skipped are the content. If the mark is meant to contribute a broken edge, do not despeckle the breaks.
Select a region, not the whole capture. Take a small area containing one full cycle of the behavior you want: one broken passage, one crossing where the bristles parted. The selection is the design decision — it decides what an impression means. Make it large enough for the biggest mark the frame needs and no larger. A tip is raster, so it survives scaling down fairly gracefully and scales up only by interpolation. If the working frame calls for a 120-pixel mark, a 600-pixel-wide selection has room to spare; a 60-pixel selection is already at its limit before you begin.
Write down what the mark contributes: broken edge, dragged trace, granular deposit, lopsided wobble. One line is enough. Later you'll need a definition of "wrong", and this is it.
One boundary, stated once: build this from your own mark or one you have permission to use. A commercial artist's brush set is another person's work, not raw material.
Define a tip without confusing it with painting color
With the region selected, run the Define Brush Preset command. Adobe's documentation on creating a brush tip from an image notes the essential behavior: the selection's color is converted to grayscale for the tip. The tip records a shape, expressed in tone, not the colors of your photograph.
That has a consequence people trip over for weeks. The color your brush paints with comes from somewhere else entirely — from the color you've chosen to paint with at the moment you paint. One tip, made from a gray scan, can produce the mark in any color. That's the whole point of separating the two things. It also means no amount of source color can put color into the tip.
So what matters in preparation is tonal structure. Darker passages make a denser impression, lighter passages a fainter one, and near-white areas barely register. Speckle and lint become scattered dots in every impression. A single hair crossing the selection becomes a single hair crossing every stroke. All of that is solved in the source file. None of it is solved in a settings panel.
Then make exactly one stamp. New layer, normal blending, full opacity, one click with no drag. Look at the silhouette, and at everything around it you didn't intend.
A faint gray rectangle means the selection included paper beyond the mark. Speckle means dust. A soft uniform halo means cleanup ate the hard edge and left a bounce of tone around the shape. Each of these goes back to the source file. This is the rule that saves the most time in the entire procedure: do not compensate for a bad tip with elaborate settings. No angle jitter or blend mode removes a rectangle that the tip contains. It rearranges the rectangle, or hides it at one scale and reveals it at another.
Delete the stamp, or keep the layer as a clearly marked scratch layer so nobody mistakes it for artwork.
Turn the stamp into a controlled stroke
A click is one impression. A stroke is a few hundred of them laid along the path of your drag, at an interval you chose. That interval — spacing, given as a percentage of tip size — creates most of what people call "obvious stamps." Tighten it and the impressions merge into a continuous mark. Open it and the eye starts counting, and a stroke that should look dragged looks beaded.
Keep a baseline. Paint the same short stroke at the same size, change one setting, paint it again on the next layer, and label both. Ten labeled strokes tell you more than one beautiful stroke you can't compare to anything.
Size and angle work on the tip itself. Size scales it. Angle rotates it, which only shows on a tip that isn't round — a circle has nothing to reveal when it turns. Roundness squeezes the tip into an oval. Adobe's page on creating a brush and setting painting options lists these controls alongside spacing, and notes that presets can be exported for another installation. None of them is a texture by itself; they change how the impression reads in sequence.
The panels then add variation: jitter applied to size, angle and position as the stroke proceeds. The distinction that matters is which change hides repetition and which quietly replaces your texture with a different one.
- Spacing decides how quickly the repeat becomes visible.
- Angle jitter breaks the rhythm of identical impressions along a line. The same stamp at slightly different rotations reads as a dragged trace rather than a chain.
- Size jitter lets the mark swell and thin. On a dry mark, some of that is closer to physical behavior than a constant width.
- Position or scatter jitter moves impressions off the stroke path. It hides repetition very well — and it dissolves the clean broken edge you preserved, because an edge only reads as an edge when impressions line up with each other.
So the honest question isn't "does more variation look more natural." It's "does this variation match the behavior of the mark I recorded." A dry brush dragged across paper spreads, breaks and thins. It does not change width at random every few millimeters. If your jitter produces behavior the mark never had, you've built a new texture — which may be exactly right, as long as you notice that's what happened.
One setting deserves its own line: input. Some variation controls can be driven by pen pressure or tilt. If a control is set to respond to pressure and you work with a mouse, you don't get subtle variation; you get whatever a mouse reports, which may be nothing at all. A preset tuned on a tablet and handed to someone without one can turn into a flat line. Record the input device next to your settings, and always note the alternative you used: take variation from spacing and angle instead, or modulate the paint by hand.
Compare a line, a filled patch and the actual frame
Three scales, three different failures, and none of them predicts the others.
A short stroke — the length the treatment actually uses. Check whether the eye reads individual tips, whether the rhythm is regular, whether the edge is the edge you wanted. This is the scale most tuning happens at and the least representative.
A filled region. Lay down strokes the way they'll appear in the frame, side by side, to cover a broad area. Failures invisible on a line show up here, because a line is one pass and a fill is many adjacent passes: any directional regularity in the tip or the spacing lines up across passes and becomes a stripe. An angled oval tip at moderate spacing can weave a visible herringbone. Heavy scatter shows as clumps and bald patches. Before you trust a fill, paint it at one steady pace rather than at whatever speed your hand happens to move — hand speed isn't part of the preset, so a fast pass and a slow one add a variable your settings can't account for.
The frame. Drop a small sample into the composition where the texture will be used, and look at it twice: once at your working zoom, where you're diagnosing, and once in an export at reading size, where the audience actually sees it. Zoom lies in both directions. At 400 percent every repeated stamp glares and you'll over-correct. At reading size, a fine broken edge can vanish into flat average tone — or the reverse, where a band you couldn't see while zoomed in becomes the most noticeable thing on the page.
When something is wrong, revise the preset. Don't blur the layer, don't overlay unrelated imagery, don't hide the fault under another texture. A patch that works only because of what covers it fails the next time someone needs a stroke somewhere else.
This is where the two-halves model earns its keep. Ask which half you're looking at. Wrong silhouette, stray content, an edge chewed soft by cleanup, an impression that goes blurry when enlarged: that's the tip, and it's fixed in the source file. Visible stamps, banding in a fill, clumps, a rhythm that doesn't match the mark: that's behavior, and it's fixed in the brush settings. You cannot fix a tip from the settings panel, and you cannot fix spacing by re-scanning. Deciding which one you're facing is most of the skill.
One comparison to run: two presets, one patch
Here's a compact exercise that puts the whole method through a single loop. Invented numbers, real procedure — and the point is that you shouldn't decide which preset wins before you've looked at both.
Start with one dry mark on plain paper, captured at roughly 3000 × 2000 pixels, unedited source retained. Clean a duplicate, select a 600 × 400 region containing one broken passage, and define the tip.
Then build two presets from that same tip, at a working tip size of 120 pixels for a 1920 × 1080 frame:
Preset A — repeat-stamp. Spacing at 150 percent, no jitter of any kind. You have deliberately built the failure you've been learning to diagnose, so you can recognize it when it shows up by accident.
Preset B — drag-broken. Spacing at 8 percent, angle jitter 15 percent, size jitter 12 percent with a minimum diameter around 70 percent. No pressure-driven controls, so it behaves the same way with a mouse.
Paint both as the same 300-pixel stroke, on separate labeled layers. Then paint a 600 × 400 patch with each, using parallel passes at the scale the frame will use.
What you're looking for:
- In the stroke, A should read as a chain of identical impressions — the baseline failure. B should read as a dragged trace.
- In the patch, B is the one that may surprise you. The angle jitter that hid repetition along a line can organize itself into directional grain once passes sit side by side, and that grain can look like banding. Reduce the angle jitter and the band may go, while the edge stops reading as broken and starts reading as mechanically regular. That trade is the actual lesson, and it has no free answer.
- Don't assume A is worthless. In some frames a regular lattice of impressions reads as deliberate printed or woven irregularity, which is a legitimate texture — just not the one you set out to build. Don't assume B is better, either.
- Don't assume every added change helps. Reaching for scatter to hide the remaining repetition is the obvious next move, and it's the one most likely to soften the broken edge you spent the first section preserving.
Record your input device, every setting, the frame size and the Photoshop version before you export anything. Then do the export and reopen described next, and run both patches again. This mark, these presets and these patches haven't been created here; the comparison only tells you something once you paint it.
Save the behavior and prove the handoff by reopening
Name the preset so it describes itself: what mark, what scale, what it's for. "BRISTLE-BROKEN-120-A" survives a year in a shared library. "Texture brush 3" does not.
Then write down what the preset contains and what it doesn't. It carries the tip and the behavior you set in the brush panels. It does not carry your color choice, the layer you painted on, or your layer blend mode, and some of what you adjusted may live in the tool's options bar rather than in the brush itself. Pressure-sensitive behavior stays dependent on the input device and its settings. A short note beside the file — version, source mark, tip size, spacing, jitter values, device — costs two minutes and prevents the classic week-later confusion about which setting produced the good patch.
Export the selected brush as an .abr file through the documented export route, and keep three things separate:
- the source mark, unedited, the thing you own and may need to rebuild from;
- the working artwork, the layered document where the frame lives;
- the brush preset, the tool itself.
They answer different questions and get revised for different reasons.
Finally, reimport and repeat. Open a fresh document, load the .abr, and paint the same short stroke and the same patch at the same size with the same inputs. If the result differs, the file hasn't failed — your setup differs, and something you relied on wasn't in the preset. An exported file proves only that bytes moved. Reopening it and painting the same two tests is what proves the tool transferred, and whatever turns out to be missing tells you what to write down next time.
You end with three files and one small test you can run again: the retained source, a descriptively named preset, and a patch that shows what the preset does at working scale. That patch is the part worth keeping. A brush preset on its own tells you almost nothing about how it behaves; the comparison tells you what it does on a line, what it does across a filled region, and where its settings stop being right for the mark you started with. When it goes wrong later — and it will, at a scale you hadn't tested — you'll know which half to open.
