Any break needs a stated relationship to that commitment. Stylized passages, dream sequences and montage each need a rule. The rule can be loose. It can't be absent.

The diagram is an invented teaching construction, not a verified schedule, but its internal arithmetic can still show the problem. Ravi leaves the venue at 5:36 and reaches the storage unit at 5:42, a six-minute walk. He spends seven minutes finding and collecting the element, then covers the same ground back. The outline has him installing the element at the venue at 5:51: two minutes after he left the storage unit, on a route that took six minutes to walk out. He cannot be back before 5:55, and installation takes two minutes on top of that. Put the missing four minutes back and the element is not in place until 5:57, the same minute the outline already spends on Ada's apology. Nothing downstream recovers those minutes, and the doors open at 6:00.

Information flow matters as much as physical movement, but it is not a substitute for the other. Ravi can text Ada at 5:49 that he has found the element. That tells her what he has, not that it is installed. The useful apology belongs after the installation: at 5:57, with three minutes before doors, Ada can tell the artist the missing element is finally in place. An unseen message cannot make a return happen early.

The minutes that don't fit

Travel, preparation, recovery and waiting are the minutes that expose loose schedules. But not every minute deserves screen time. The test is whether the minute changes plausibility or suspense.

In the example, the six-minute walk each way and seven-minute retrieval are real constraints in the initial outline. They mean Ravi cannot also make a second trip, cannot take a phone call that lasts ten minutes, and cannot be delayed by a locked gate without the return slipping. That constraint is dramatically useful. It forces a choice: Ravi can rush and arrive breathless, someone else can bring the element, or the element can be closer than the outline assumes. The constraint is not the enemy of the pitch; it's the engine.

A blank minute that changes nothing—a wait in a corridor with no consequence—doesn't need accounting. But the episode should know it's there. One way to know is to mark which minutes the camera is watching and which it is deliberately skipping. The skipped minutes still belong to the shared interval.

The lesson for the pitch: one impossible connection can invalidate an otherwise convincing schedule. The reader doesn't need a minute-by-minute chart in the final document, but the pitch should convey that the writer has checked the sequence closely enough to trust it.

Repair the event or revise the promise

Three honest repairs exist for the example. Two reshape the schedule and appear below; the third is arithmetic. Keep the original geography and set Ravi's return at 5:55, as the strict version at the end does, and the apology follows the installation. Silently shrinking the journey or repeating the same minutes is not a repair.

Repair one: move the retrieval. Keep the required seven minutes on site, but change the geography. Ravi is sent to a storeroom two minutes away: he leaves at 5:36, arrives at 5:38, collects the element by 5:45, returns at 5:47, and installs it by 5:49. Ada's 5:57 apology now has grounds. The cost is suspense. The trip is only two minutes each way, so the episode loses the friction of the farther journey and the risk of a delay. If the element is meant to arrive "just in time," moving it closer removes the "just": by 5:49 the element is installed, so the 5:57 apology no longer depends on a last-minute finish. The apology becomes ordinary.

Repair two: openly omit story time. Keep the original six-minute journeys and seven-minute retrieval, but abandon the promise of uninterrupted screen time. Stay with Ada from 5:36 to 5:41, then cut on a clock change to 5:47. The card makes six omitted story minutes explicit. Resume at the venue; Ravi returns at 5:55, installs the element by 5:57, and Ada apologizes after that, before the 6:00 opening. The episode now covers twenty-four minutes of story time in eighteen minutes of screen time: five shown minutes before the marked omission, thirteen after it. That is compression because screen time is shorter than story time. The cost is the missing interval and Ravi's struggle; what it gains is a concentrated venue-side episode. Off-screen action alone is not an omitted interval, and it cannot cure a dependency the clock has already contradicted.

If the apology could happen at any point, the real-time structure is decorative: a countdown graphic on a story that never needed one.

End the pitch with a readable account of the promise and the dependency most likely to break it.
