Prepare a Film Lookbook for Print Without Treating the Screen PDF as Press-Ready
Keep the screen edition. Prepare a separate print edition against the requirements of the printer handling the actual job, then inspect the exported file and an appropriate physical proof. A PDF that looks right on your laptop establishes neither a usable binding layout nor an approved result on paper.
Start with the object you intend to make. Its finished size, binding, paper, pagination, and production process determine which changes belong in the file. Starting with a familiar export preset reverses that relationship: it gives you an answer before you have specified the job.
This is not a reason to rebuild a successful lookbook. It is a reason to distinguish the parts that can remain from the parts whose conditions have changed.
Get the specification into a usable form
Ask the provider for the finished trim size, binding, paper and cover arrangement, page-count constraints, bleed, safe areas, required page structure, marks, PDF standard, and color-handling instructions. Record unresolved items as questions rather than silently filling them with settings from another project.
Some terms describe different boundaries. Trim is the finished page after cutting. Bleed is the extra artwork beyond that edge. A safe area keeps important content inward from a boundary; it is not extra artwork outside it. The binding creates another relationship to inspect, particularly when a face, line of text, or small clue crosses facing pages.
A public provider guide can establish an example, but it is not an agreed specification for your order. For a bounded case, Greenerprinter's saddle-stitched booklet guide calls for page counts in multiples of four, single pages in reading order, and 1/8-inch bleed. It counts covers and asks that submitted files omit crop marks. Its self-cover route uses the same stock for cover and interior.[^1]
Those are instructions for that route, not universal settings. The exact metric equivalent of 1/8 inch is 3.175 mm, not precisely 3 mm. If a job specifies 3 mm, use 3 mm; if it specifies 1/8 inch, enter that value or its exact conversion. Do not let an approximate tutorial equivalence change the job.
For the example below, assume a finished size of 152.4 × 228.6 mm and an eight-page self-cover booklet. The trim is a teaching assumption, not an order placed with that provider. Paper, production-specific color profile, PDF acceptance, and proof approval remain unconfirmed.
This record is useful precisely because it does not pretend the unknown fields are settled.
Preserve the screen master before adapting it
Keep the editable screen layout and its exported PDF. Make a separate native print version so that page additions, image crops, binding adjustments, and output-specific settings do not overwrite the existing reading experience.
Our original demonstration begins with a six-page Bellweather lookbook excerpt: a title, a full-bleed image page, a visual-approach page, a two-page image, and a back cover. The artwork is a geometric test image, not a photograph or a film location. A small black marker represents a detail that matters to the reader.
The supplied files are programmatically generated geometry tests. They are not InDesign exports, an Acrobat production inspection, or a physical proof. They let us inspect actual page boxes, image coverage, and pagination without claiming those other checks occurred.
Six pages are fine as this screen excerpt. They are not the eight-page booklet assumed for the print exercise. We keep the first five pages in place, add an image/source note and a production-intent page, then place the original back cover at page eight. The image pair remains pages four and five.
That placement matters. Adding an inside-cover page at the beginning would shift the pair to pages five and six; in this conventional left-to-right booklet, those would no longer be the same facing pair. A page-count repair can create a layout problem even when every page is present.
The additions also need a purpose. Do not expand the pitch with two pages of vague promises simply to satisfy a number. An intentionally blank page may be more honest than filler, but its location should still be deliberate. In our fixture, the added pages are labeled roles, not a claim that a real film's credits or production intentions have been approved.
Fix the artwork, not just the bleed setting
The first image page reaches every trim edge in the screen file. When the same page is placed inside a larger page with a declared bleed area, the image still ends at trim. Outside it is an unprinted strip.
This is the distinction to check in the native document. A bleed guide does not extend the image for you. Adobe's bleed tutorial separates entering the document's bleed values from positioning artwork to reach the guides.[^2]
Open the declared-bleed defect example and inspect page two. The page boxes allow space beyond trim, but the image does not occupy it. In the corrected geometry-review example, the image placement extends into that area.
For this deliberately simple image, enlargement supplies the extra coverage. That is a design change, not an invisible technical repair. With a photograph, enlarging the image may cut off something at the opposite edge or change the intended framing. First inspect whether the original linked image already contains usable material outside the current crop. If it does, adjust the frame and crop deliberately. If it does not, choose between a different crop, a border, or a different image rather than pretending an empty extension is usable bleed.
Keep the purpose of the page in view. If the image establishes a narrow doorway, cropping away its threshold might remove the spatial idea the lookbook was meant to communicate. A full-bleed treatment is not more important than the image's job.
The test's before-and-after files contain the same declared bleed dimensions. Their contents differ. A numerical check of the boxes alone would therefore miss the original defect. The renderer check samples a point in the declared bleed: it is white in the defective file and contains image pixels in the revision. That establishes coverage at the checked point in this known fixture—not successful trimming of a physical copy.
Reconsider the detail at the fold
The six-page screen excerpt places the black marker across the center of the two-page image. On a flat digital spread it is one shape. In the print version, that center is also the proposed binding location.
Rather than assuming the shape will remain legible, the revision moves it fully onto the right-hand page. The overall image still spans the pair, but its important detail no longer depends on seeing across the fold.
The fixture makes this movement easy to inspect because the marker is artificial and its position is known. In a real lookbook, the equivalent might be an eye, a subtitle within a reference still, a hand touching an object, or the gap between two people. Decide whether the spread is carrying atmosphere or information that must remain intact.
Moving the detail is one route. Another is to use a different image across the spread and give the important detail its own page. A third is to change the composition so that the fold becomes an intentional division. What matters is whether the bound object preserves the reason you chose the image.
Do not convert the movement in this example into a universal inside-margin rule. Its distance is a design choice in a synthetic image. Actual binding clearance, paper behavior, and whether a spread feels comfortable to hold still need review in the relevant physical object.
The screen edition need not inherit the new crop. That is one reason for maintaining two editable versions. They serve related purposes under different viewing conditions.
Export from a checked native layout
Adobe documents the InDesign route as File → Export → Adobe PDF (Print). Before export, its guidance directs users to inspect links and run preflight. The export controls include the intended range, marks and bleed, and destination color handling.[^3]
Use those controls to implement the job record. For our assumed reading-order booklet, the intended structure is eight individual pages, not imposed printer spreads. Do not rearrange pages into sheet order because it looks more “print-ready.” The named provider's guide says it handles imposition.[^1]
The marks decision belongs to the same specification. Adobe's general bleed tutorial includes a crop-marks step, while this provider's submission checklist asks for crop marks to be removed.[^2][^1] Follow the actual receiving workflow instead of combining every instruction you have encountered.
For color and PDF conformance, get the requested standard and profile from the provider. Adobe's export guidance identifies a destination-profile control; it does not supply the missing agreement for your job.[^3] Our geometry fixture makes no claim to satisfy a production color specification or PDF/X standard. Its grayscale appearance is not proof of either.
Keep a short export record next to the file: native document version, application version actually used, export date, intended page range, page arrangement, bleed, marks, preset, color settings, and unresolved warnings. This is more recoverable than a filename ending in FINAL-final2 and a memory of which checkbox you used.
If the native layout reports an unresolved link, investigate the exact asset rather than treating a recognizable preview as confirmation that the export contains the intended source. Likewise, a content revision should go back into the maintained layout, not become an undocumented fix that exists only in one PDF.
Inspect what was exported
Open the output you are about to send, not merely the document from which it was made. Check the cover, every page transition, the two-page image relationship, and the final page. Then inspect the dimensions and the relevant page boxes.
In Acrobat's documented Set Page Boxes controls, the TrimBox represents the final trimmed size and the BleedBox the area beyond it. The CropBox controls the visible or printable area. Different boxes can overlap; an apparently correct page view is not a substitute for knowing which boundary you are inspecting.[^4]
Our geometry-review file has eight pages. Each TrimBox is 152.4 × 228.6 mm. With 3.175 mm on each side, the surrounding page extent is 158.75 × 234.95 mm. These dimensions were checked programmatically, and actual PDF renders were inspected. The six-page screen file remains separate, with no added bleed extent.
Those checks establish a small set of facts about the supplied files. They do not establish that linked production images are adequate, the provider has accepted the PDF, a color conversion is correct, or the paper reproduces the intended shadow detail. The accompanying fixture record names both the checks and their limits.
When checking a real export, connect each defect to its source. If a page is missing, check range and pagination. If an image stops at trim, repair its source placement. If the important detail is still at the fold, revisit the composition. Changing the filename or resaving the same defective PDF is not a correction.
A screen inspection does not approve the paper
Decide what the proof must establish before treating it as approval. A bound sample can help you judge page handling and the image at the fold. A reproduction proof is useful only to the extent that its process represents the result you are buying. Ask the provider which aspects a proposed proof can and cannot demonstrate.
For this lookbook, the questions are concrete: does the detail remain visible without forcing the booklet flat? Can the small source note be read comfortably? Does the full-bleed image retain the distinctions needed to understand it? Does a page turn arrive where the intended facing pair begins?
Record an observation before prescribing a correction. “The marker disappears into the fold” would support repositioning it. “The colors are wrong” would need a more specific comparison and a conversation about the reproduction conditions. Do not alter all image files on the basis of an unspecified mismatch.
No physical proof was produced for this demonstration. The print review file therefore remains a geometry example, not an approved production deliverable. That boundary should remain visible when the files are handed to someone else.
At the end of a real job, keep two clearly named outputs: the preserved screen edition and the separately prepared printer-specific edition. Attach the latter's specification and check record. A useful record says which file was inspected, which requirements it meets, what the proof established, and what still needs a decision. “It opens correctly” answers only the first, smallest question.
