The copy is careful. No competitor is named. Nobody says "absorbs more" or "lasts longer." A title card reads "Two cloths. One job." The director's note says the contrast is purely visual, no claims attached.
And still: a viewer doesn't receive the words and the pictures as two separate documents. They receive one passage, in order, in about fifteen seconds. The pictures are doing arithmetic the copy declined to do.
That's the working problem for any treatment that stages two products in the same frame. A side-by-side sequence proposes a conclusion whether or not anyone writes it down. So the useful question is not "does the copy make a claim?" It's: what does the sequence ask the viewer to believe, and what would have to be true for that belief to be earned?
Below is a way to answer that on the page, and to decide what to do when the answer isn't available yet. The worked example is invented—two unbranded cloths, no shoot, no measurements—because the method is the point here, not a product.
Write down the sentence the pictures write
Before you defend the treatment or revise it, describe it.
Read the proposed sequence the way a viewer meets it, and write the conclusion they'd reasonably draw, as one sentence with a subject and a verb: the left cloth pulls the water up faster and leaves the counter cleaner. If you can't write that sentence, you don't yet know what the passage proposes, which means you can't tell whether it's supportable either.
Then split the sentence. Some of what you wrote is directly visible in the frames. Some is an inference the frames invite.
Visible: the cloth's surface went from dark to matte on camera. Inferred: this cloth absorbs faster. Visible: a thin film remains along the right edge. Inferred: this cloth leaves residue. And underneath those, a broader inference that no shot states: this is the one you'd want, and this is the typical result.
Keep the writer's intent in the room—it's genuinely relevant, and it usually explains why the sequence exists. But intent doesn't cap what the sequence suggests. You know what you meant; the viewer gets the pictures, the words, the order, and their own habits of reading advertising. Where those diverge, the treatment has to close the gap, either by changing the picture or by adding the support the picture is currently borrowing.
How the staging produces the difference
The conclusion comes from specific choices. Running through them is diagnosis, not a recipe for rigging a comparison—the reason to name them is that they're the places where the passage's claim actually lives, and therefore the places where you can change it.
Timing. A cut implies shared time. Two shots intercut read as one event happening at one moment, even if they were filmed an hour apart with different amounts of water on the counter. Whatever the schedule did, the edit asserts simultaneity. That isn't a trick someone has to intend; it's what the cut means.
Scale and frame share. Whoever fills more of the frame reads as the subject, and the subject reads as the hero. A cloth shot from six inches and a cloth shot from two feet are not presented as peers, whatever the copy says.
Angle and light. Raking light makes residue visible; flat light hides it. If one surface gets the honest light and the other gets the flattering one, the picture has reached a conclusion the copy avoided.
Starting condition. Two puddles that look equal on camera are the whole foundation of a fair-seeming test, and "look equal" can be doing a great deal of work.
The selected outcome. There is the end state, and then there is the frame of the end state you keep. One run, honestly shot, is still one run. If several were shot and the cleanest was chosen, the passage now presents a best case as a typical one.
Edit order. Before and after, placed next to each other, implies that the first caused the second. Sometimes it did. The sequence says it either way.
Appearance is not performance
Some contrasts are fully established by looking. Color, size, weave pattern, edge finish, how the cloth folds in the hand, whether it's stitched or cut. These are appearance facts, and a camera is the right instrument for them.
Other contrasts are claims about behavior: absorbs more, absorbs faster, leaves less behind, holds up through more washes, uses less water to rinse. Those need conditions, and—this is the part that trips people—the conditions are dictated by the specific conclusion. There is no master checklist of "matched conditions." You derive them from the sentence you wrote at the start.

Notice what the table doesn't say: it doesn't say any particular test is required, and it doesn't say how much evidence is enough. Those are decisions for people with the product in hand and responsibility for the claim. What the table does is make the dependency visible while it's still a storyboard, when changing it is cheap.
Two things are worth holding onto here. First, stylization doesn't insulate a passage. Slow motion, a music bed, no voiceover, a "purely visual" label—none of it removes the inference, and removing the narration may sharpen it by removing the hedges. Second, neutral wording doesn't neutralize a picture. Words can hedge and the image can still conclude.
Which is why the unresolved conditions belong beside the image: in the margin of the storyboard page, under the shot list, in the treatment itself. Not in a disclaimer on a later page, where nobody making the picture decision is looking.
Route the claim, or change the picture
Once the implied conclusion is written down, there are three honest moves. All three start with that sentence.
Substantiate it. Take the intended inference, the proposed sequence and the conditions it depends on to whoever owns the product claim and to qualified claims review. They may want testing under defined conditions. They may narrow the claim. They may say the passage can't run as drawn. Two limits on the writer's side: you can expose the implied claim but you can't certify it, and a demonstration performed by someone else—a supplier, a competitor, a video you found—is not evidence about this product. Seeing something work somewhere shows it's possible, not that it's typical for yours.
Change the staging. Keep both products, drop the outcome. Show them as objects: in the hand, in the frame, folded, edge to edge. The appearance contrast survives; the result shot doesn't. Then check that the implication hasn't crept back in through the cut, the light or the frame share.
Remove the contrast. One product, one surface, one panel. No comparator means no implied ranking. Any claim in the copy then stands on its own support, which is a separate question—not a solved one.

A worked page, invented
The following is a fictional treatment page, written to show the method. No product was tested. Nothing was filmed. No cloth is better than the other; both are unnamed because naming one would smuggle in a conclusion the exercise is trying to surface.

Now the annotation, in the plainest terms available:

What the visual meaning depends on and does not establish: how much water each side received and whether it was measured or eyeballed; whether the two counter sections match in material, age, finish and cleaning history; the actual time each cloth sat there—five seconds of edit is not five seconds on set; pressure and number of passes, or whether either cloth was merely laid down and lifted; whether the film on the right is water, residue or a highlight from the light; whether the before and after frames come from the same run, and whether they are the best of several; whether the person handling the cloths knew which was which. The sequence also asks the viewer to accept one run as representative.
Who can resolve it: the product owner for the product facts and any testing; qualified claims review for whether the resulting passage can run. Neither is the writer's call.
Two routes from there.
Route A — the passage waits for evidence. The page stays as drawn, with an open-conditions box printed on the same page as the storyboard, listing each unresolved item and who confirms it. The idea survives, the schedule is exposed, and the claim isn't presented as established while the answer is outstanding.
Route B — the passage drops the performance contrast. No counter, no pour, no after-shot, no split frame. Two cloths shown dry, in hand and in close-up: weave, construction, size, how each folds. The copy describes form. What the page now proposes is that these are two differently made cloths, which is something a camera can establish by looking. The title likely changes too—"one job" plus two products in one frame still prompts the viewer to ask which one, and if the copy's answer is "either, depending on what you want," the page should say that.
Worth naming the loss: Route B gives up the race, which was probably the reason the sequence was proposed. It isn't a smaller version of the same ad; it's a different ad. That's a real cost, and pretending otherwise makes the choice harder than it needs to be.
Read the revision whole
After either route, read picture, copy, timing and labels together, because a change in one part can leave the claim standing somewhere else. Rewording "absorbs" to "picks up" accomplishes nothing while the after-shot remains. Cutting the after-shot can leave a title that still implies a ranking. And a small-print line in the corner doesn't convert an unsupported result into a supported one—it just adds a sentence to a passage whose pictures still say what they say.
Then write, in ordinary language on the page, what the revised passage is now intended to communicate and what remains open. A treatment is a proposal. Presenting one as though it had been cleared is a category error, and it's the kind that surfaces late, when the shoot is already scheduled.
Two things belong at the end of the page, and neither is a disclaimer paragraph. First, the conclusion the sequence now proposes, stated in the same plain sentence you'd use for a viewer. Second, what that conclusion depends on and who decides next.
"Illustrative" is a word for a drawing. It describes the kind of image you're proposing; it has no effect on what the image means. If the passage shows a result, the passage asserts it—and that assertion, not the voiceover, is the thing the treatment has to be honest about.
