The treatment contains a video. It is 16:9, it is beautiful, and around second seven a line crosses the frame, turns a corner, and resolves into a logo. Everyone in the review can see that the timing works. Nobody in the review can say what the line turned around.
That is the problem with pitching projection mapping from the content file alone. The content file is one asset in the proposal, and it is the only asset that carries no information about the thing your idea actually depends on: the light meeting a particular object at a particular spot, seen from a particular place.
A projection-mapped proposal becomes assessable when you show three things together — the physical surface, the projected change to that surface, and the position the audience occupies while the change happens. Do that, and the flat animation becomes one view among several instead of the whole story. The five moves below are a writing and layout method for a treatment, not a technical design. Everything after the surface description belongs to a projection specialist working from real conditions.
Show the object before anything happens to it
Open the sequence with a plain view of the object. No glow, no content, no composite. Just the form, described in ordinary terms, with the participating features named.
Take an invented example. A brand plinth, 1.1 m tall on a 60 cm square footprint. The front face carries a rectangular recess — call it 30 cm wide, 40 cm tall, cut 4 cm into the face, centered. To the right, a flat side face meets the front at a sharp vertical corner. Those are the given facts for what follows; nothing later in this article changes them.
Three features participate in the idea: the recess, the corner, and the side face. The plinth's base, the floor, and the wall behind it surround the illusion without driving it. That distinction is worth writing down, because the moment a wall or floor becomes load-bearing for the idea, it stops being scenery and starts being a dependency.
Why bother with a plain base view first? Because a reader can only separate the real surface from the projected additions if they have seen the real surface on its own. A finished composite showing the whole plinth alive with imagery is convincing and useless in equal measure: it removes the evidence of which part is doing the work. The reviewer ends up judging the animation, when the thing being judged is the relationship between the animation and a 4 cm-deep hole.
A neutral drawing serves this better than a photograph, because you can put callouts on it. A photograph is fine too, but remember it carries a viewpoint you did not choose deliberately — and viewpoint is the subject of the third move.
Pair each beat with the feature it uses
Now write the content as beats, and give every beat a physical feature it uses and a perception it produces. The brand's sequence is line arrives, line turns, mark appears. On this plinth it takes four beats, because the recess the line enters is also a place it has to leave:

The middle column is the one most treatments omit, and it is the one that makes the proposal falsifiable. Beat 1 does not say "a line animates in." It says a line crosses the front face, reaches the recess's top edge, and appears to descend onto the panel inside. The perceived result is that the line goes in. That perception exists because the recess is real, not because the animation drew a convincing shadow.
Beat 2 does the same work at the other end of the recess. It does not say "the line moves on." It says the line arrives at the lower lip, crosses it, and continues over the front face toward the corner. Without that row, the line would sit inside a 4 cm hole in one beat and wrap an outside corner in the next, with nothing accounting for the stretch of front face between them. That stretch is not a gap in the animation. It is a real surface, at a real angle to the light, and it is where a viewer decides whether the line is attached to the plinth or floating in front of it.
Mapping software documentation makes a related distinction worth borrowing here. Resolume's mapping pages, for instance, treat output alignment and warping as a stage separate from source content — the same artwork gets fitted to a specific geometry, face by face, after it has been made. Your treatment does not need to reproduce that workflow. It needs the two-stage awareness: the content is what you would export from an animation tool, and the alignment is the part that only exists because of this plinth.
There is an honest complication to be aware of. A recess does not receive projection the way a flat face does. Its inner walls face different directions, so what lands on them, and how brightly, depends on where the light is coming from. Old assumptions about light falling evenly on a surface do not survive a 90-degree fold or a 4 cm lip. You do not need to solve this. You need to name it beside the beat it affects, so nobody reads Beat 1 as a settled outcome. The same complication runs on the way out. The lip the line crosses, and the front face beyond it, meet the light at different angles than the recess interior does, so brightness can shift again at the exit. Name that beside Beat 2, the same way.
Put the viewer into the representation
Beats 3 and 4 only work for someone who can see two faces at once. That is not a detail; it is the whole event. So state a proposed viewing zone and show the sequence from inside it.
Say the zone is a band roughly 3 to 5 m out, between 25 and 35 degrees to the right of the front face's normal, along the approach path. From there, both the front and the right side face are visible, and the corner beat reads as a single line. Then show the off-axis view: an approach from the left. From the left, the side face is invisible, which means Beat 3 never happens and Beat 4 does not exist. The idea is not weakened; half of it is simply absent.
That comparison is more useful than any amount of polish on the hero frame, because it converts a preference into a constraint. If the room only admits a leftward approach, the treatment has to change the corner, move the plinth, or drop the wrap. Better to discover that while it is still a drawing.
Keep two placement questions apart, because they get merged by accident all the time. Where the projector sits and where the spectator stands are different positions serving different jobs, and they can pull against each other. A projector near the viewing position gives one result; a projector 45 degrees away gives another, with different shading in the recess and different brightness across the folded faces. Do not resolve it in the treatment — that is the specialist's call on site. Just make sure the reader can see that it is unresolved, and that it matters.
If the proposal also includes a filmed record of the event, there is a fourth position in the room: the camera. Say whether the film's camera will occupy a spot the audience can occupy. If the film is locked off at an angle no visitor will ever stand in, the film depicts an event nobody in the room will see. That can be a perfectly good decision. It should be a decision.
Make the mockup's assumptions readable
An illustration is not a survey. It has no measurements from the site, no light readings, and no projector behind it. Label accordingly, and label in three categories:
- Drawn — the plinth's geometry, the recess depth, the corner. Taken from the design brief, not from a fabricator's confirmation.
- Simulated — the glow, the falloff, the apparent depth inside the recess.
- Proposed — the plinth's finish and color, which determine what the projected brand color will actually look like when it lands. A brand color projected onto a warm beige surface is not the brand color.
Then ask what would change. If the recess were 2 cm deep instead of 4, would Beat 1 still read as an interior? If late-afternoon light comes through a window to the right of the plinth, does the brand shape survive it? If the audience approaches from the left, which beats are left? Each answer identifies one dependency that a specialist investigation has to close.
Put the question next to the affected beat, not in a general disclaimer at the end. A reader who reaches the corner beat needs to know right there that the alignment is unverified. A paragraph of caveats at the bottom of the treatment gets skimmed, and the beat it was meant to qualify gets remembered as a promise.
Hand over the relation, not a guessed equipment list
Four things leave your hands and land in the specialist's:
- The plain base view, with the participating features marked.
- The beats, each paired with its feature and its intended perception.
- The proposed viewing zone, and the second view that breaks the idea.
- The named question — the one dependency a survey would have to resolve.
What does not belong in the treatment: a projector model, a lumen figure, a lens, a rigging plan, a mounting height. Inventing those does not make the proposal look more considered. It makes the reviewer check the wrong thing, and it puts numbers in the room that nobody has earned. Alignment, brightness, access, power, permissions, crowd arrangements, and weather protection come from the site and from people who do this work. Say so plainly, and the treatment reads as confident rather than thin.
If a dependency is genuinely unresolved — say the fabricator has not confirmed the recess depth — present the beat as conditional and say what the condition is: the line descends into the recess, assuming the final build holds something close to 4 cm of depth for it to descend into. If that changes, say what changes with it.
And if the fallback is a flat screen, call it a flat screen. A screen standing in for the plinth is a different proposal — different visual event, different budget, different reason for the brand to be in the room. It is allowed. It is just not projection mapping, and the room should get to choose it knowingly.
The sequence you are delivering ends with a proposal in context: the plinth, the four beats, the viewing zone, the second angle that shows the failure, and one question attached to the beat it threatens. The most useful version of that question is physical and specific. Stand where the audience will stand. Does the line still read as one line when it crosses the corner? If it does not, nothing else in the treatment is worth refining until the beat is redrawn.
